About 3Style

3style-template-header-plain.jpg

I have been a huge fan of RnB & Hip Hop since the late eighties. When I was innocent 10 year old at junior school, my sister was big fan of the music back then, so her influence is undeniable. Because she used to play the music so loud in her bedroom, it was inevitable I would get hooked on this form of music I now love. Other than music, I've been following football for years and for all my troubles i still remain a loyal Aston Villa fan. (Come On The Villa!)

I came from a household where music was always being played, be it my Dad Listening to Reggae, Lovers Rock, Country & Western (Yeah thats right! My Dads from Jamaica, and they love that music, no lie!), and especially a lot of my Mom's Soca & Calypso records (as my Mom is from Trinidad, you can't escape the Soca!), Pop Music or Soul, my parents were and still are real music lovers.
My Dad used to be a DJ while he was in the RAF and stationed in Cyprus during the late Seventies (You could say he was the original Aiya Napa DJ!!!). The First 12" record I bought was Soul II Soul's 'Fairplay', back in 1987 from my local Woolworths! Thats how old school it gets.

I always wanted to be a DJ but couldn't afford the equipment, even though my record collection was on the steady increase. I then decided to make compilation tapes on my old stereo for my friends and family, during my school and college years. I decided that this was just going to be a hobby, so I followed my Mom & Dad's ideals and concentrated on going to University to get a degree, (which I did) and then a 'Proper Job'. I realised that the temptation of DJing was too much. I made the decision to use my student loan to buy a set of record decks and a mixer in 1996, so that I could follow my dream, and make some extra money while doing this.

After tireless hours of practising instead of studying, I hooked up with a school friend to form a DJ crew. We decided to call the collective the "3Style Crew", and begged many a promoter in Birmingham to give us the one chance to play at their club nights. The 1st event we played in Birmingham, was as warm-up DJ's at Toots Nightclub underneath Libertys at their Friday Nite Soul event. The headlining DJ we were going to play alongside that night was Simon 'Schoolboy' Phillips! (talk about being thrown in at the deep end!), but the everlasting memory I have of that night was how well we did, considering we were rookies! I then started to play in venues around Birmingham, such as Grahams, Kudos and New Orleans (damn! I just realised all these places don't exist anymore). At that time I also started playing on the student circuit, in and around Birmingham and Manchester.

I started at Galaxy in June 2000, and used the name 3Style after the "3Style Crew" had disbanded. I started my radio career by presenting the 'Hip Hop Hang Suite', but it wasn't long before I was presenting the station's R&B & Hip-Hop flagship specialist show 'The Flava Zone' in January 2001, Since then I have now moved into daytime programming, and in September 2003 I started presenting Mid-Mornings, but now you can find me on Friday eveings 11pm till 2am

I also used top present a Galaxy Network show called the 'The Hip Hop Elementz' Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1am-3am, which was broadcast across all Galaxy's in the England. The 'Hip Hop Elementz' won a Sony Silver Award for 'Best Specialist Music Programme' in 2004. This is quite an achievement, which i thought i would share with u!
I can’t deny this is a great job, as some of the people I have met and interviewed over the years include: Usher, Alicia Keys, Mary J Blige, Kanye West, Ciara, Chris Brown, Akon, Sean Paul, Joe, Omarion, Bow Wow, Rhianna, Ludacris, Ja Rule, Kelly Rowland, Mario, Brandy, Ginuwine and Ne-Yo.

I have been spinning tunes at legendary nights and events around Birmingham including; Friday Nite Soul @ Toots & Graham's, 'Soul On Saturdays'@ Bonds, Harmony @ The Que Club, Tuesday Nite Soul @ Mckluskys, Beautiful @ Club Exclusive & Club Hidden, ACFEST, Miss Moneypennys, R'n'B @ Code, TRUE @ Air, Twice As Nice, The Bel-Air (Belfry) Nightclub, Release Yourself (The Global Room) @ Pacha, Ibiza, Spain and many a concerts such as Ginuwine, Donell Jones, 112, Jagged Edge, Cassidy, Joe, Next & Mya and of course the 'Infamous Galaxy Weekenders!

With the ever changing world of club nights, I have started Urban Rewind the club party after the very successful feature on my afternoon show. This launched in February 2007 and has become one of the biggest ‘Ol Skool’ parties in Birmingham.
I'm often asked, "How do you go about being a DJ?" Answer: Never give up, be persistent and practise, practise, practise!!!
