Famously attractive to backpackers and soul-searchers, Bangkok has established its position as one of Asia’s liveliest and most fashionable cities. It’s the place where scores of soaring concrete skyscrapers juxtapose against frenetic markets and hushed golden temples - highlighting the hybrid of traditional elegance and exotic charm that makes Bangkok so enticing to foreign travellers.

For traditional sights, take in the majestic Wat Pho temple - home to the famous Reclining Golden Buddha.  For more exotic experiences, haggle for a bargain in the dark alleys of the bazaars in Chinatown, or watch the sun set with a cocktail at The Sky Bar - the 63rd floor State Tower boasting awesome views of the capital.

If you’re feeling adventurous why not venture out into the high-concept clubs and bars of Sukhumvit and Banglamphu, or check out the Bed Supperclub on the Sukhumvit Road. Famous for its futuristic visuals and chic all-white recliner couches, Bed will guarantee a unique and unconventional evening. It’s useful to know that Thailand’s clubs run a strict over-21 policy and photo ID will be required at most venues.

Hotels and guesthouses vary widely throughout Bangkok, and most travellers look to backpackers’ enclave, Banglamphu to provide them with the widest choice at affordable prices. The Lucky House on the Khaosan Road is a budget inn where the cheapest rooms go for just 390 baht. Those in search of more up-market rooms should head towards Siam Square and Thanon Ploenchit.

Bangkok’s renowned party atmosphere is at its best during Songkhran - Thai New Year in April. The occasion is marked by widespread water-fights and specialised entertainment. The biggest parties take place on Thanon Silom and Thanon Khao San, the legendary Mecca for Southeast Asian backpackers.
